fredb answers:

If I was a manager reading your transcript in preparation for an interview, I think that the Poli Sci courses seem more interesting. On the other hand, Social Deviance sounds intriguing.

Talk about it with family and friends. It will help you decide what interests you most, which is the right decision.

Ruth asks…

do all mlm/network marketing companies work under the same model…the model that looks like a pyramid?

fredb answers:

No, there are several variances in commission plan type, Binary, Matrix, Stairstep Breakaway, Unilievel and hybrids.
One thing that makes the MLM model similar is the “Hotel” or “Weekly” meetings and the compilation of a warm market list that includes your friends and family. Rarely would a MLM company teach you your true target market. Don’t take this wrong, I support MLM. I do not support what has given the industry a black eye, ehich consists of harassing friends, family and anyone within reach into joining a biz opp.

BEST WISHES!

Charles asks…

what are some MLM/ Network Marketing companies that sell weight loss/ diet/ fitness products?

as many as you can think of would be really helpful!

thanks in advance!

fredb answers:

Awareness Life sells very good weight loss products. Go to their website
www.biohealthpro.awarenesslife.com. Their products are listed in the Physicians’ Desk Reference for Nonprescription Drugs & Dietary Supplements.

Betty asks…

If MLM / Network Marketing companies did not allow recruiting for 2 years…would anyone do it?

If one had to sell the product or service for 2 years and sell enough to earn a respectable amount of personal commissions before one could recruit, do you think anyone would stick around in these companies?

fredb answers:

It doesn’t sound like an MLM company then – the PRIMARY focus of MLM’s is to recruit and grow, thereby alienating your friends and afamily as quickly as possible

Mary asks…

What is an seo web marketing specialist?

I am looking for a job, and a place is hiring for this. The job description says i would manage website marketing, like search engine oprimization, internet video, blogging, and other things. Also to use traffic tracking apps to recognice patterns and trends to get effective marketing techniques. I would do this freelance since i am 17 and still in school
So what exactly do you do? also it wants examples, so would i need a degree?? and what would examples be?

fredb answers:

This job requires someone to help make a website easily found by search engines, so that when someone types keywords into Google, for example, that website is at the top of the search results list.

To do this job well you need to understand how search engines work and how websites are built.

You would need to be able to demonstrate to your manager that you have made changes to the website that are driving more visitor traffic from search engines.

This is usually a job done by someone with a marketing background who understands what potential business customers are searching for, what website design and content changes are most effective and who can stay on top of search engine technology.

James asks…

What type of jobs can a mass communication degree lead to?

(comprising of public relations and journalism marketing and internet relations)

fredb answers:

Errm. U will definitely be working in the media industry. That’s for sure. Follow your passion my friend. Do what you think is suitable for you. Be it reporting, broadcasting, public consultation and stuffs.

Laura asks…

What kind of college degree will land me a job in companies such as Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, etc.?

I’m thinking of getting a degree in either Communications or Public Relations and Marketing.

I really want to land a job in a internet company or game company in California such as Electionic Arts, etc.

If not these degree‘s what degree(s) are the best.

fredb answers:

I will give you an answer that will save you years of heart breaking effort and research. It will save you money too. It does not absolutely does not matter what you major in to work at these companies. It does not even matter if you’ve been to college? Don’t believe me? Find a recruiter who works at one and ask them. What matters then? What matters is if you can be profitable to these companies, if you’re personable, and passionate. Don’t be fooled by college recruiters who lie to you and tell you the only way to make something of yourself is go to college. With upwards of 80% and higher going on to high education what seperates the wheat from the chaff? Those who stand out and know what they are doing.

Robert asks…

Could someone take me through the whole process of creating your own website and getting it hosted?

My friend says theres a host, a website builder and lots of things you need to get your own website that has its own domain. But im confused. Help?

fredb answers:

Great question! It is indeed a complex problem. I’ve outlined the five services (I wish there were less, but that’s the way it works) you need to make a website: software, content, bandwidth, server, and domain. You will find most hosting services will gladly bundle all these together for a fee. It’s your choice on which you want to expend: effort or money. Here is what those services actually mean:

Plugins: Websites nowdays sit on a framework of software that understands concepts like blogs, comments sections, reader submissions, etc. That framework determines what your website can “do” in terms of dynamic content. People make plugins for that framework so you can make your site do more. If you care about customizing that stuff, make sure that framework is Apache. If not, accept a hosting service’s proprietary blend that looks the best for your needs. It takes months or years of dedication to understand that stuff. Alternatively, you can use no plugins and make a more primitive website without any dynamic content. This is nice in way, you can just make a text file called “index.html” and fill it with your crazy rants, place it on a server, and instantly let the world know what a crazy nut you are. At the other extreme, you can get a big hosting service to let you type your blog into one of their own websites and translate your crazy into a neatly formatted website without knowing a thing about software at all. If you choose the last route, you will need a hosting service that combines all these described services together.

Content: The actual words/pictures/videos you are going to deliver. Enough said. In the 21st century, the big websites have their members deliver the content. If that’s what you want, focus on getting the right content-builder. If not, focus on content.

Bandwidth: This is the internet service provider (ISP), the cables and routers connecting your server (more on that later) to the rest of the world. If you have a company host your website, they will have their own ISP, and you will choose/negotiate bandwidth through the hosting company. This determines how many megabytes of content your website can deliver each month, and how fast. Your ISP also determines what your IP address is. Consumer ISP’s (like the one you are probably using now to read this) don’t work well for hosting websites because your IP will change and they severely limit the bandwidth going from your computer to the world.

Server: The computer(s) that deliver the content to the ISP. You can turn your existing computer into a server by loading Apache, but as said before your consumer ISP isn’t going to work well. Commercial hosting services put your website onto a sliver of one server to keep costs down (assuming your website is relatively small) and bargain better prices with commercial ISPs.

Domain: the service that takes people who type in your URL “http://www.example.com” to your server’s IP address “123.456.789.012″. You have to pay for this (can’t do it yourself) because there are large networks of computers around the world dedicated to making sure that domain name points in the right direction.

TO PUT THIS ALL TOGETHER: A common strategy is to find a hosting service that can provide the plugins, bandwidth, and server all together. They’ll give you an IP address you can see your website from. Then go to a domain registrar and pay to have your website name (domain) linked to that IP address.

A nerdier strategy is to find a hosting service that provides a framework for the plugins, bandwidth, and server. You find plugins that do what you want, or program your own, and then get a domain registrar to link the IP address as above.

Or, just get a blog on one of those blogging websites. They handle everything for you and you can remain blissfully unaware of the horrendous amounts of code, sweat, and tears underlying the modern website.

Ken asks…

PLEASE!! can someone tell me what is the difference between having your own domain and your own website?

ALSO… when you get a website, do you have to register for anything?? (law-wise)

please give me recommendations on which web host to get!

ALSO (sorry!) .. what does it mean ‘to host your own website‘?

fredb answers:

Calm down, Blossom, and let someone in the business help you with this: ME.

A domain is the name of a website and its address on the internet, like www.yahoo.com. Whatever name you make up for YOUR website can be registered just for you as long as nobody else has used it yet.

Your website is the collection of files that carry your message, sell your stuff, show your pictures and do all the other things you see on the web. The web pages are separate files, handled just like any other files on your computer. Pictures are also separate files that are called by the individual web page files to display in certain places on each page. Yet other files are used to control the appearance of text and graphics on each page. All those files exist together under a big “master folder” on a computer that’s connected to the internet so other people can see your stuff.

So, your domain name is like the address on a house. Your website is like the house itself.

Domain names must be registered so there are no duplicates, and so the electronic address (the IP number) can be assigned and made available to the internet as a whole. That way, when someone types in your web address, a system of big computers matches your name to the address, which points to the specific computer where your web site is “hosted.” You can think of this as a telephone directory. When domain names are first registered, it takes awhile for all the directories to be updated. This is known as “propogation time.” Usually the update happens right away, but sometimes it can take a day or two for all directories around the world to be updated.

What makes your web site and your domain really YOURS is that they exist independently on the internet the same as yahoo or anyone else. There are some services that sell (or give away) “space” on their own websites -sort of like renting an apartment. So, people who want to see your web site must first enter a the mater domain name, then a “/” and then YOUR web site name. What’s really going on here is that “your” site is just a page or pages on some other web site.

Registration of your domain is centralized in a big central file, but there are many, many places that will handle registration for as little as nothing to as much as $50 or more per year. This is sort of like being able to buy a fishing license at many stores -but it all goes back to just one place. It is convenient to handle domain registration and web site hosting all at one place, but it is not necessary. (Registration is for a minium of a year, but you can buy multiple years at one time, like a magazine subscription.)

Now, let’s have a look at a simple web site I designed for a friend. Go to a separate browser window (so you can keep this one open) and type in the domain name: www.ucsmoke.com.

By the way, domains are often referred to as URL’s. URL means “Unifrom Source Locator.” Just another way of saying, “address.”

You’ll see Uncle Charlie’s Smoke House appear. Just a few pages. Notice how pages within the website (such as “Music”) show www.ucsmoke.com and then a slash (“/”) and then the page name. The first page on the site -the “home” page has just the domain/URL. All the other pages have that PLUS an additional name following the slash; this ties them back to the home page, but gives them each a separate address of their own. You could just as well type in the entire address of that page and go straight to it, if you wanted to. Back on Charlie’s home page, you’ll see his picture, which is a separate file called by code on the page, and some blinking boxes to call attention to some new info. To see all the code, click “View” on your menu bar at the top of the browser, then click “Source.” And there’s the code that makes his home page show up the way it does. No matter what you use to make a web site, it all gets reduced to this kind of code -even if you never actually look at the code itself.

Ok, mess around Charlie more, if you like, then close him up.

You asked about “law-wise.” The registration I’ve talked about is just to get your show on the road, as it were; there is nothing legal about it. Think of it like telephone service: you don’t need a special permit for one -but you do need to order service and get a phone number. That said, if you are using the internet to run a business, you might need a business license where you are, or maybe a sales tax permit, just as you would if you opened an office to sell things over the phone.

“Hosting your own” means that you maintain and operate your website right from your own PC -YOU act as your own host. That involves some registration of its own, and has other challenges, to: for example, your physical connection to the internet may need to be upsized so you can handle multiple simultaneous connection to people who visit your site. Also, special security measures to avoid people hacking in. Best left to the pros.

Where’s a good place? Try:

www.lunarpages.com.

Your domain name is free for life, they’ll handle registration for you, and they’ll host your site for less than $100 a year, and yes, it is your very own. The service is excellent, but there is a lot to learn. There are also sites that are less costly -and some that are free -but they usually put ads on your site and have limited features. Scope out all the ones you see mentioned in response to your answer. Bear in mind the cost of registration.

I hope this has been helpful.

What social changes might implementation of Buddhist ethics bring about? For example, how would it alter advertising or marketing generally? What impact would it have on television?

fredb answers:

Remember budhism is a spritual religion not a religion for rule the nation like islam. Basic thought was that to get rid of all worldly evils by way of path shown by lord budha.you read his teaching of eight fold path. The most important is the philosophy of equality and removal of casteism. But now many of politicians are twisting its philosophy for there own use and atleast in india making it a refuge for dalit class. New budhist r such people. They are from maharashtra and claim to be follower of b.r. Ambedkar. Certainly it was the social evil of hinduism that compelled him to change religion in frustration when he failed to reform own religion. Casteism is deep rooted and even dalit have same feeling , chamar ( shoe maker) dont treat the dom ( who clean human excrement ) equal. So never think budhism is a way to rule better learn its spritual aspects.

George asks…

What is the most effective form of online marketing a new business can do?

Some examples would be (but not limited to) Social Networks, Search, or Banners ads? Given you know your target clientele, what would be the most effective solution?

fredb answers:

Honestly? You have to pay for it (not too expensive) but I would have to go with googleAdds. Give that a shot because using that can get you access to thousands of clicks per day (and you don’t pay for your add being placed, you only pay when people click on your add to go to your page). Other than that social networks are probably pretty good. I wish I got money for every add I clicked on when i was on MySpace. Lol.

Helen asks…

marketing assignment help?

hi, i have a question i have gotten for a marketing assignment and it’s really giving me a hard time!
Ok, here’s the question:
social responsiblity is a key compound of marketing communication . Identify how companies today are practicing social responsible marketing communcation.
Give at least 2 examples.

Please help me with this.
It would be greatly appreciated
x

fredb answers:

Good question.

One of the ways companies are exercising social responsibility is by addressing the Green issue. More and more companies are talking about how they are working to reduce their carbon footprint on the world and helping to preserve our natural resources. GE and Saturn are just two examples of companies doing this.

Another evidence of social responsibility is with companies who are giving back to the community. This can be seen by the likes of Chevrolet, for example, who donates $1,000 to a college scholarship fund each time it selects a player of the game.

Another example of social responsibility is with companies that give proceeds from their sales to support organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, or help support Hurricane Katrina Relief.

A fourth example would be with some of the drug companies advertising their products and offering to help financially strapped individuals receive their drugs for free or at a reduced cost.

I hope these help you.
